ATTENTION IAN AXEL: Stop, drop, and roll! That's right, this boy is on fire! Though this 23 year-old is just breaking into the music scene, his debut album, I'm On To You, makes him seem like a seasoned professional. He is an extremely accomplished pianist, and the classical training shows, both technically and compositionally. This foundation has allowed him to shape his music in a much richer way. Unlike many artists in today's music scene, Axel does not have to hide weak instrumentals or songwriting abilities behind a vocal mask. In fact, the vocals did not even erupt from his larynx until he was 20! Luckily for him, they are naturally flawless, and fit perfectly with his apparent personal and pianistic quirk.

With solid parallels easily drawn between the sound of Ben Folds and his own, there is no doubt Ian Axel will be able to attract a large and diverse following that will keep expanding for as long as he continues his career.

But you don't have to take my word for it! (I have waited so long for Reading Rainbow references to fit into context!) I am certainly not the only one who thinks this to be true. For instance, MTV can't seem to get enough! Both "Heartbreak Girl" and "Stand Tall" were featured on The Real World in June of this year, and "We Are" was not only featured on The Read World Award Bash in April, but on The Hills as well! Maybe it's time for them to give in to their true desires, and give him his own show!

Axel also enjoyed a residency at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City during the month of June, is a member of the NY Songwriter's Circle, and has graced 5 states, from coast to coast, with his musical presence! He is also B-Line Entertainment's featured artist for the month of July!

I spent quite a lot of time sucked into the Tube of You and I, watching countless videos of Mr. Axel performing, even as young as 3! (I'm not kidding. Click here after you're done reading this feature, and watch. It is adorable.) They are all so excellent! I really had no idea which to post, but I finally decided on "You Don't Love Me At All". It can not even be found on the record!

Now let's talk about this album! I'm On To You may seem like a short record, but don't let the number of tracks fool you! Only 6 tracks are listed (There's a hidden track! I know, I love them too!), but each one packs quite a punch. They provoke a level of joy similar to a Church service like the ones in Sister Act! For those of you who have not seen Sister Act: First of all, where have you been?! Secondly, I apologize that I have made this visual difficult for you, but just imagine the most enthusiastic choir party you've ever experienced! Trust me, as you listen to this album, you'll be singing your hallelujahs as you give in to the undeniable temptation to join the Ian Axel choir!

I can honestly say this is a record I am unable to find flaws in. Each track is thrown out with a poised enthusiam, yet manages to be raw at the same time. "Heartbreak Girl" is wild and fun, while "We Are" is simply beautiful. My favorite track, however, is "Stand Tall". Perhaps opening the album with it was the most brilliant move of all. It is inspirational, and immediately involves the listener. A connection between the musician and audience is automatically set in place for the rest of the record, with exposure to highly relatable emotions, and a call that can be directed not only at himself, but to everyone. After this we are sold. Ian is now our friend, and we love him. It's a magical moment when you can dance and cry simultaneously. It is one of life's sweetest releases, and it is carried directly to our ears by Ian Axel- our servant of delicious pop sounds.

In summary, I'm On To You is a hearty and empowering meal for the soul... much like Peanut Butter and Jelly.

While I'm not quite sure of the significance of PB&J in Ian Axel's life, I can honestly say it's been a huge part of my own, so I know where he's coming from!

JAY BRANNAN: 

More than just a Housewife

When writing a feature on Jay Brannan, where does one even begin?  He is one of the most beautiful singer-songwriters I have ever come upon in my lifetime.  Not only is his music remarkable, but he has a beautiful soul as well, and it is luminous in his work.

Jay Brannan is originally from Texas, and has lived in California, but luckily for us East Coasters, he has found a home in NYC.  He first entered my life last Spring, through the wonderful world of MySpace.  I was browsing the folk database, and there he was.  As so many before me, and so many after, I was instantly captivated by his painfully honest, yet quirky, lyrics, as well as his crystalline vocals.  Brannan's music encapsulates an ever-present feeling of broken innocence, and once you begin to listen, you are left gasping for more- as if his music were the oxygen that filled your lungs.

While I originally sold my soul to his music through MySpace, the true home for Jay Brannan fans can be found on YouTube.  It is through this site that Jay has been able to open up to fans, and provide an extremely intimate experience.  His sass and humour provides endless entertainment!  He has also never been afraid to expose his emotions (and if he has been afraid, he does it anyway), and the rawness and relatability he brings to viewers has gained him diehard fans all around the globe.  He has performed live for his international fans in the UK, Paris, Brazil, South Africa, and countless other locations.

Those who do not know Brannan from his wealth of exposure on the internet, may recognize him as Ceth from John Cameron Mitchell's film, Shortbus.  This film needs a separate write-up in itself, perhaps a dozen, before the degree to which it has touched so many can begin to be explained.  In short, it is a film about self exploration, and discovery, through sexuality.  It is in Shortbus that Jay is able to showcase his song, "Soda Shop", which has become somewhat of cult classic.

Not long after I discovered Jay on MySpace, I suddenly found myself watching him perform at my college.  He was opening for Jason Mraz, and since Mraz himself was a last minute booking (I know, I have no idea how they got him to play on such short notice), I had no idea beforehand that Jay would be playing.  By the time he started playing "26-Hour Day", I was completely breaking down.

When he left the stage to make way for Jason, my heart completely dropped!  How could he be leaving!  I want--- no, I NEED more!  At this point in time, I would have been completely content if Brannan had continued to play all night long, and we had skipped the Mraz set entirely.  My love for Mraz has been made clear on countless occasions throughout this publication, so the level of admiration I have for Jay should be easy to gage.  I have only seen him play twice since; once on my 21st birthday last July at Joe's Pub, and once this Winter at the Bowery Ballroom.  Both shows were sold out.  If any of you have been to these venues, you know how different they are.  Joe's Pub is one of the most intimate venues in NYC, while the Bowery Ballroom is far larger.  This being said, the performances were barely different at all.  

I encourage you, with all of my being, to get out and see Jay Brannan play live.  His performance with captivate you.  His personality will woo you.  His vulnerability will produce unshakeable chills across your body.  You will laugh a lot, you will cry more, and you will love it.  Lucky for all of you, Jay is currently embarking on his first official tour!  The "FAT IS A FEELING, NOT A SHAPE" Tour will be passing through a city near you very soon!  The dates and ticket information can be found on his website:  http://www.jaybrannan.com.  They are also posted in the entry directly before this one!

Jay launched his "FAT IS A FEELING, NOT A SHAPE" Tour to publicize his newly released debut record, Goddamned.  I will be writing a separate review for this record, but for now all you need to know is that it is amazing, and you need to buy it.  It is available on iTunes, and hardcopies are also available through his website and at shows!  This makes things ridiculously convenient, since you will all be attending shows throughout his tour!  :)

One song that I am very happy made the record is "On All Fours".  Here is a version Jay did for YouTube last April.  It's different than the one heard on the cd, but still equally as fabulous!

Jay has a way of formulating ideas and choosing the exact words to strike a nerve. Every line is poetic, and in my mind, brilliant. He is able to bring to light issues that other musicians would not touch, and he does so with a flawless elegance.  I will be seeing him perform again tonight, at the Highline Ballroom in NYC.  Ironically, the last person I saw there was Jason Mraz.  Jay Brannan is clearly no longer just an opening act.  He is a force to be reckoned with.

Guaranteed to Make You Feel 

Crazy, Sexy, Beautiful!

Kirsten Price is a feisty songstress with an unwavering self-confidence.  Having grown up with a self-proclaimed "addiction to singing", there was no question her destiny was to be a rock star.  Growing up, she sprang at every singing opportunity that arose, and was in countless choirs, spanning all genres from Baroque to 1960s Pop.  Despite intense involvement in performing the art of others, Price's true passion always remained in her own creations.    

When she was 20, Price was anxious to travel to a place where she could have a fresh start, and be revitalised, so she made the jump from London to San Francisco.  She wanted to be able to become who she was meant to be, without anyone filtering it through who she had been.  This was a time to blossom, and blossom she did.  With nothing more than $200, a pair of jeans, and a toothbrush to her name, she found herself living vicariously through the sandy beaches of Northern California for several weeks.  This fearless nature and adventurous spirit is definitely a main ingredient in her sound and musical identity.  She is able to achieve an edginess without coming off as harsh, or sacrificing her femininity; a rare balance to come by.  

July 1st marked the long awaited arrival of Price's debut record, Guts & Garbage.  The standard response to this title, which she gives to interviewers, is that the record took a lot of guts to put out, and she weeded through the garbage to get to the good stuff.  With the level of fierceness exhibited in this release, I would also say that the sounds on this record can be felt coming straight through the gut-- and there is certainly no garbage remaining.  

Guts & Garbage kicks off with the song, "Magic Tree", which successfully introduces us to Price's sultry vocals and saucy style.  Her strong sex appeal is reminiscent of the spider women of 1940s film noir.  Dark and foreboding.  Here is a music video for "Magic Tree", as seen and heard on Showtime's The L-Word.

One of my favorite tunes on the record, as the title of this article suggests, is track 4, "Crazy Sexy Beautiful".  Like the rest of the album, Price's confidence rubs off on the listener through this song.  As you rock out to it, I guarantee you will feel the empowerment rushing through your veins.  In an interview with RockRemedy.com, Price reveals that much of the inspiration for this song comes from long time idol, Tina Turner.

While I could easily go on to list any of the remaining tracks as favorites, "Let Me Go" creeps out above the rest.    The track paints a picture of an unrelenting past love, refusing to be erased from the storyteller's life.  It showcases the pain experienced on both sides of the situation, and the breaks in the demands of the storyteller, "Just let me go," develop more desperate undertones as the song progresses, while maintaining the same tough exterior.  She needs to be "let go" in order to break away and be free of the chains of the past.  Something many of us can strongly relate to firsthand.

Kirsten Price is far different from the likes of the current pop princess scene.  She is an up and coming powerhouse diva, deserving of the title.  She is a force to be reckoned with, and I have no doubts that she will continue to plow her way to the top.  With strong female vocals similar to those of Christina Aguilera, the soul of Betty Davis, and an orchestral creativity flashing back to that of Savage Garden, Kirsten Price has achieved a remarkably solid debut.  Its soulful-pop mixture will leave not just your ears, but your entire body, yearning for more.

DANA ALEXANDRA: THIS GIRL IS FIERCE!

To say that I am excited about this weeks featured artist is an extreme understatement.  I have been anticipating showcasing this ray of sunshine ever since I first heard her several months ago; before the RED BANANA even existed.  The sounds of Dana Alexandra are as refreshing as the tallest glass of cold lemonade on the hottest of summer days.  Her record, Fashionably Late, has quickly become one of my all-time favorites.  (This is not to be taken lightly, as I assure you, my ears get around!)  It is booming with lyrical sass and wit, and melodies to sate any musical appetite.  This small town native is an extremely intelligent musician with much to say, and the flawless ability to say it.  Her music is an undeniable outpouring of her entire self, but unlike many singer-songwriters, Dana is able to expose this without dragging us down into a somber state.  

I can not remember the last time I was presented with an album that held my attention completely, throughout its entirety.  This record is a full blown party!  It's fun, and it's exciting!  There are records we all know and love, but whenever we put them in, we instinctively skip to our favorite tracks.  This album is different.  Every time I start it, I find myself getting sucked in and listening to the whole thing.  There are no weak tracks, making it impossible to choose a favorite!  

The day I received the record in the mail, it immediately sought out a home in my car stereo, and has not been evicted since.  It has effectively made my commutes to work and school the highlight of my day.  All of my fellow road-dwellers have become accustomed to the sweet sounds of Dana Alexandra (trust me, I belt it out like I own the road), and as I've glanced over through my rolled down window, all that has greeted me is smiles!  How rare a sight during rush hour!  Behold, the power of Dana Alexandra!

Let's take a moment and talk about what can be found on this recorded gem, shall we?  The 9 tracks of this record are absolutely infectious.  It is filled with very innocent and childlike qualities, while incorporating a clear sense of growing personal maturity-- a much needed reiteration of the necessity of playfulness in our everyday lives, amidst all the drama and hardships.  Here is a brief look at what is included:

Track 1.  "Swallow":  Catchy, catchy, catchy!  This is the perfect start to the perfect record!  It incorporates a sing-a-long quality, without dumbing down the greatness of the tune!  After this track, I guarantee you'll be hooked.

Track 2.  "Show and Tell":  This song has the best chorus on the record.  It will have anyone and everyone singing and swaying along!  It is impossible to resist belting out, "I FEEL FINE!"  (Trust me, you will!)

Track 3.  "Hand Me Down":  Everyone loves a good hum, and this song gives us just that from the very beginning!  Thank you for yet ANOTHER feel-good song!

Track 4.  "Jenny's Song":  I refuse to sway from my original statement that favorites are impossible on this record, but I really love this song.  It shows a gentler side of Dana Alexandra, and the heart-warming quality of her voice makes the song even more beautiful and relatable.   

Track 5.  "Feels Like Home":  This song is so fabulous that it was recently featured on NYC's Saturday night program, Fearless Music Television!  For more on this program, click here. Here it is for you to enjoy:

Track 6.  "Don't":  This is a wonderful laid-back tune, that will leave you completely relaxed and satisfied.  Its peacefulness is sure to leave you with an un-erasable smile on your face.

Track 7.  "Pickpocket":  "or maybe Korean...I'm not really sure what you were..."  Just when you think your listening experience could not possibly get any better, Dana Alexandra decides to shake things up even more with this brazen (in the absolute best way!) tune.  THIS TRACK IS HILARIOUS.  Everyone I have played it for has completely lost it with laughter.  If you've ever been pickpocketed, or had something stolen from you, you will definitely be able to identify with this song.  Dana takes us along for a very authentic reactionary ride after being pickpocketed.  The build up, the process, the aftermath--- it's all there.  Aside from the humour, the harmonies are delicious!  Listen, and love it.

Track 8.  "D Train":  This is the perfect follow-up to "Pickpocket".  It takes the listener to a much more introspective place, and we can feel the tender desperation in Dana's voice as she begs, "Darling, don't you leave me out."  (Please don't!  She's lovely!)

Track 9.  "Rock Paper Scissors":  A favorite of many, this is a fantastic send off for the listener.  Beginning with the title, this song embraces the childlike feel of the record, and applies it eloquently to the life of someone finding their way into adulthood.  There is a very home-made feel about it, provoked in part by the slow harmonica, in which we can find comfort.  When the track ends, we are left in happy silence...until we press play and begin all over again.

There is something unmistakably liberating about music that demands interaction, and Dana's will definitely not fail you!  If summertime could be captured in sound, this would be it.  Please check out her MySpace, where you can hear more of the goodness I have spoke of!

A First-hand Experience

Early last summer, I was flipping through channels looking for something to watch, and nothing seemed to catch my interest. After about fifteen minutes of disinterested channel surfing, something stopped me dead in my tracks. On a local programming channel I had never even stumbled upon, I was captivated by a calypso-like drumline, a pleasant melody, and cute, witty lyrics—the sweet sounds of none other than Ingrid Michaelson. I didn't know it then, but I had just been introduced to someone who would quickly become one of my favorite musicians.  Anyone who knows me personally can attest to this.

What I was hearing was Michaelson's hit single, "The Way I Am," but in the days prior to the airwaves, Ingrid's face (and her music) were completely unfamiliar to me. I ravenously searched for her music and told everyone I knew about her. I instantly identified with her lyrics, as I'm sure almost anyone, particularly in my age group, would. They have an unbelievable innocence about them—one that seemed to fit my mood no matter what it was. Whether I just needed to sit and think, be distracted at work, or have a companion for long trips in the car, Ingrid's music was what I
would reach for. A year later, this remains true.

The best way I can think to describe her is a modern-day Joni Mitchell, but one with more innocence, and a gentler tone. There is something for everyone to relate to in her witty lyrics, whether it be the freshness and purity of "The Way I Am", childlike innocence of "The Hat", or heartbreaking fragility experienced in "Breakable".

On June 1, I was lucky enough to see Ingrid live, and my admiration for her more than tripled. The thing that was the biggest surprise for me was that not only were her lyrics witty, but she herself had the whole crowd laughing from start to finish. She seemed to know how to make the audience feel like they had known her for years, and she was doing nothing more than performing in their living room. She is on tour all summer, and if any of you get the chance to catch her, you will not be disappointed. It is impossible not to love the ukelele-strumming diva, whose fan base has grown at lightning speed. At age 28, she already has a lot under her belt, and most definitely has a bright future ahead.

Here is a tale of my concert experience:

It's a Sunday night on South Street in Philadelphia, and it's relatively quiet for an early summer evening, with the exception of the Theatre of the Living Arts, whose featured guest this evening is--you guessed it--none other than Ingrid Michaelson. Since she surfaced last summer, I have been a diehard fan, and although I was chomping at the bit for the performance, I had no idea just how fantastic it would be.

I had gone there expecting a show that was nothing short of stellar from the New York native, but what I wasn't expecting was to be laughing almost the entire time. I would highly recommend seeing her live, if only for the sole purpose of a good comedic musical performance. Her stage presence is unbelievable, leaving the crowd chuckling constantly, and leaving everyone feeling as if they have known her their whole lives.

As for the musical aspects of the performance, Michaelson's set included the hit "The Way I Am", and her newer single, "Breakable". She opened with "Die Alone", which seemed to wake the audience up, and appropriately announce her presence. One particular highlight was her performance of the upbeat single "The Hat", during which Ingrid proclaimed that she would be "unhappy and bitter" if anyone in the audience chose not to sing along. Fortunately, it was clear that neither performer nor audience was left in this state during this evening. Other song choices included "Overboard", "The Chain", "Keep Breathing", and "Giving Up", which many audience members recognized from the hit show Grey's Anatomy.

Not only did Michaelson's set list include favorites from both of her fantastic albums, Slow the Rain (2005), and Girls and Boys (2007), but impromptu performances of "Edelweiss," several television show themes, and even a few classical pieces, also graced our ears. Much to the delight of the audience, Ingrid broke into renditions of the Who's the Boss and Full House themes, along with a participatory Full House trivia game. Her sweet encore performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" practically had everyone eating out of the palm of her hand.

What made this show particularly spectacular was the combination of Michaelson's soft vocals, unsurpassed innocence, and sense of humor. It was these elements, along with the occasional addition of her ukulele, that made the performance one that was undoubtedly human-- one you should make a point to see this summer. I left that venue feeling as if I had known her for years. Her love of performing was evident, as was her connection with her band, particularly "musical sister" Allie Moss, who was a wonderful addition to the ensemble. With voice colors similar to that of Ingrid's, she was the perfect complement.

The first opening act consisted of Philadelphia- born George Stanford, whose debut album Big Drop hit stores this past Tuesday. Stanford's vocals had a rough quality, but not in a negative sense. He was a pleasant opening to the evening, particularly with the song "Downriver", which had a especially interesting guitar accompaniment.

Following Stanford was the up and coming Greg Laswell, who will be touring with Ingrid for the entire run of her tour. His melancholy lyrics, gentle tone, and beautiful piano lines, make him someone worth scoping out. For a taste of Laswell's sound, check out the single "What a Day". Greg's debut album, How the Day Sounds, is available on Vanguard Records.

If you get a chance to catch Ingrid (and Greg) in the coming months, you will not be left disappointed. It was clear that Philadelphia is near and dear to her heart, as it was her first performance spot outside her hometown. 

Watch out for the possible "wedding tour" she spoke of, in which audience members will have to attend wearing tuxedos and ball gowns. It is amazing how much Ms. Michaelson's fan base has expanded, just in the last year alone, and she will surely be a face we see frequently in the coming months.

A Look into the Mind of Mraz.

These are simple words, and yet the concepts behind them are filled with such complexities. The one passion in my life which has led me to empowerment in all of these areas is music.

I am very close to receiving my Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College, but I have been a musician all my life. I began taking piano lessons when I was 6, and have sung ever since I could phonate. I live and breathe through music, as I'm sure many of you do, and I am commonly drawn to others who do the same. Because of this, Jason Mraz has turned out to be my perfect match. I have gained far more from his ideas than those of almost any other musician. I had heard some of his music back in high school, when his song "The Remedy" was viciously battling John Mayer's "Your Body is a Wonderland," but other than that I hadn't really paid much attention to the phenomenon that was Mraz.  I was re-introduced to his music last Spring (2007) by Jenna, who came into my dorm room insisting that I watch the "Geek in the Pink" video, so I did.  Repeatedly.

Here it is, in all of its funktastic glory.  My favorite part is when he is swinging the cotton candy.  If you aren't dancing by that point, then you're a square. :

Needless to say, after living with that loop of greatness for hours, I was addicted to Mraz, and by some act of God it was announced that he was scheduled to play at my school just a few weeks after my miraculous re-discovery.  The original act that was rumoured to be playing was Ben Folds.  That obviously never worked out, and even though I am quite a fan of Folds, I can't say I was terribly disappointed by the replacement.  The show was wisely scheduled during finals week, but I held together and went.  I'm sure my grades suffered because of my decision, but you'd never hear me say I regret it.  

When I first embarked on this feature, I almost felt stupid. "Who doesn't know Jason Mraz?" I asked myself.  I am shocked to find out that the answer is: a lot of people.  Jason Mraz is not just a talented musician, but an amazing man.  He uses musical ideas to entertain, but also to illustrate an entire state of mind.  Mraz has helped me completely transform my life, and I'm sure his ideas will help change yours as well...as long as you learn to live by his motto: Live high.  Live mighty.  Live Righteously.  Let's break this down, shall we?

Live High.

While it is very possible/probable that Mraz meant this line quite literally, I would go out on a limb and say that it can also be interpreted as a musical high.  A Jason Mraz concert is a very freeing experience; one that most certainly taught me to "live high."  I had not listened to very much of his music before I was engulfed in my first live show, so that night I was blasted with a large dose of both passion and witticism.  All of his music is deeply rooted in emotion and his songs showcase his lyrical brilliance.  These intensely personal connections with the audience are dressed up with feel good melodies that somehow leave the listener feeling uplifted.  

This April (2008), I was able to see him live again, during his "Music, Magic, & Makepeace Tour."  The shows sold out within seconds (I am not exaggerating) of the presales, and somehow I was quick enough to get tickets.  Jenna and I stood in line for hours the day of the concert to ensure we were close to the stage.  (not that I don't wedge myself up to the front regardless...but still...)

Kristen arrived, and shortly after, we were let in.  I've been to a fair amount of shows recently, but none like this.  What you need to understand is that the "Music, Magic, & Makepeace Tour" did not supply the audience with a concert, but instead with an EVENT.  The show lasted for almost 5 hours.  It was amazing.  Once Jenna finishes battling with YouTube I will link some footage.

Mraz has taken his fine self overseas for the time being, so most of you will not be able to catch a show anytime soon.  For now you will just have to get high off of his recordings.

Live Mighty.

All I can tell you is to read his blog.  He started posting in September, but it took me until sometime over Winter break to find it.  I was lying in my bed surfing the internet mindlessly, hungry for meaning in anything I could find; and there it was.  If you do mosey on over to the good ole freshness factor five thousand, I recommend that you start at the beginning and work your way to the present.  You get a really good sense of who Jason may be.  

What does this have to do with "living mighty," you ask?  Everything.  While Mraz's writing is incredibly quirky, and a joy to read, the depth in his thoughts is undeniable.  Reading it is like a crash course in empowerment.  Almost every entry details a piece of the puzzle that has helped him improve his lifestyle and state of mind.  The vibe of the style of writing itself is refreshing, and every time I leave I am left with this aftertaste of "YES, I CAN!"  It's a good feeling.

Something I have touched on briefly elsewhere on this webzine is Jason Mraz's eco-savvy ways.  He teaches us to live righteously by caring about ourselves and our Mother Earth.  He talked about this a lot while he was on tour, as we watched him quench his thirst via an array of water bottles.  (If you scroll up and look at the pic I took when he was arriving at the show, you will see him decked out in his water bottle gear.)  His entire tour was focussed on staying green, and those SIGG bottles were only a small part of how he made this happen.

Mraz is also a strong supporter of eco-friendly clothing.  Most of the shirts you will ever see him in come from a company called Blend Apparel.  A lot of their goods are made from 100% Bamboo Fiber.  If you want to jump on this train of ultimate green-ness, please do.  Their designs are hip, and their prices aren't too shabby either.

THE WILL KNOX EXPERIENCE

Let me first start out by saying that one of the main reasons I even created the RED BANANA was so I could expose more of the world to the greatness of Will Knox, and others like him. I am someone who ravenously hunts for music, as a starving lioness does a buffalo. While this may not be the most glamourous of analogies, it certainly is an accurate one. If any of you are friends with me on MySpace (and you all should be, so if you aren’t, add me!), you know that I have over 1,000 friends; more than half of which are musicians. I make a point of listening to every band that sends me a friend request before I will add them back. Even though I have a slew of pending requests, it never seems right to add something without even giving it a listen- not only is it unfair to the band, you could also be missing out on something amazing. Like the British superstar that is Will Knox.

In preparation for writing this feature, I retraced my steps and found that Knox had added me on September 30, 2007. At the time I must have enjoyed him, because I commented on his page and put his profile in the random artists section of my top. A few months and a break-up later, I was going through my MySpace and there it was: Will Knox. Was it fate that brought his music back into my life? Anyone who believes in the concept would undoubtedly say yes, as the first song I listened to during this Will Knox revival was “Never Letting Go,” from his Buckled Knees EP (featuring his band: Jeni Magana on bass, Clayton Mathews on fiddle, Timur Yusef on drums, and Kyle Hauser on banjo). As soon as it started playing I broke down into tears. This was what I needed. This song expressed perfectly all of the pain and suffering I was struggling so desperately to purge myself of. The connection was immediate. I’m sure you will have a similar experience once you listen.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Will Knox is one of the songwriting geniuses of our time. A comment like this is not something I would casually throw around about anyone; this is music I sincerely believe in. Every element of his music is absolutely brilliant. It is practically impossible to speak of strengths when there are no weaknesses to be found. Often times, bands hide behind what they do best. For Bob Dylan, it certainly wasn’t musical complexities or sparkling vocal lines that made people love his music; it was his poetry. Did we all grow to love Miles Davis for his relatable lyrics? No, it was his playing and creative instrumental expression. But here I sit, trying to explain to you what it is I love most about Will Knox, and I am at a loss for words. Every person I have exposed to his music has enjoyed it; no matter what style line they typically travel. Some people find joy in the flawless wit of the lyrics, others in his exquisite musicality. There is something for everyone, because EVERYTHING is there.

I’ve experienced Knox in every medium. I’ve been to live shows, watched videos online, and listened to recordings. (Once you’ve caught this bug, you are always wanting more.) One thing that never waivers is the intimate connection between Will and his instrument. He seems to use his voice and guitar as an outpouring of his soul, and this is so overwhelming that it forces the audience to do the same. You cannot simply listen to the music of Will Knox, but are instead forced to experience it.

While Will’s emotional connection to his audience is strong, his music is not all tear jerking. During lighter tunes, he never sacrifices his lyrical perfection. We are still taken on a visual journey with each one. Here is a video of one of my favorites, “Cog in the Machine.” The performance was filmed by Jenna at a show in New York City at 55 Underground. I absolutely love the way the instrumentation helps illustrate the lyrical analogy of being a worker bee cog in the machine of life.

At that same show, Will talked about Jimi Hendrix and credited him as the inspiration for picking up a guitar. (Thank you, Jimi.) As a tribute to Hendrix, he played his own rendition of “Voodoo Child.” I too am a major fan of Hendrix, and this is one of my favorite tunes. Of course the result was slightly different than the original, as it was acoustic, but the passion is what shined through. It was a great performance, and I’m sure Hendrix would be proud.

Knox is not a one-genre man. He understands music, and truly appreciates the magnitude of its power. This comes out in both his songwriting and his performing. Another video I want to share, to demonstrate this, is a collaboration with Abstrakt. While it is obviously not the kind of track you will find on Knox’s Buckled Knees EP, I still really love it, and I hope you do too.

As I’ve said to many, the tunes of Knox are ones that can be left on repeat in your iTunes for months, and you would never be sick of them. This is something that rarely happens, as even our favorite artists can begin to grate on our nerves.
